What to Wear to College Graduation
College graduation is an important day. It’s a culmination of years of hard work and symbolizes a transition from college into the workforce.
Whether you’re attending someone’s college graduation or graduating yourself, deciding on an outfit is important. You want to wear something that represents you but in a formal or semi-formal way. It doesn’t have to be black tie but your outfit should have a touch of class and even prestige to it.
While this may sound confusing, the good news is that we’re here to help. Read on to learn more about what to wear to college graduation.
What Should Graduates Wear to College Graduation?
Most of what you’ll be wearing during your college graduation will be hidden due to the robes and hat that you wear. However, that doesn’t mean the outfit you wear beneath your cap and gown aren’t important. Learn about how to create a graduation outfit that wows all in attendance.
What Dresses Should You Wear to Graduation?
We recommend wearing graduation dresses that are on the shorter side due to the gown covering most of your torso and legs anyway. The color of the dress can match the color scheme of your school but it doesn’t have to, so you have options.
When it comes to dresses you should wear for college graduation, Sherri Hill can get you started with some inspiration. Ultimately, you have some flexibility when it comes to dresses.
That said, one of our favorite options is a fitted dress that has some flare. It won’t get in the way of your cap and gown and plenty of color options are available. Floral dresses and sleeveless mini dresses can also be a great choice for a college graduation.
What Jewelry Should You Wear to College Graduation?
When it comes to jewelry you don’t have to go too crazy. Instead, focus on jewelry that looks formal or semi-formal. We recommend wearing slim jewelry as well because too much bulk can take away from your outfit.
That said, you can still enjoy your favorite necklace, bracelet, rings, and anklets. Just make sure you’re not excessive with your choices. Earrings are also a good choice but if you do go the hoop route it might be best to go with your smaller hoops on graduation day.
What Shoes Should You Wear to College Graduation?
While the dress is important, the most important part of your outfit on your big day is your shoes. We recommend going with something that has a heel to it, like a block heel or a wedge.
While you can sport your favorite pair of red-bottom heels, you’ll be taking lots of pictures and doing a lot of walking after your graduation, so you’ll want to keep that in mind. For this reason, wedges and other shoes with a slight heel are the better choice.
Make sure the shoes match your outfit and don’t be afraid to add a little flare in the way of fun designs or colors.
What Should Guests Wear to a College Graduation?
When you’re attending a graduation the choice of outfit is important because you won’t be covered by a cap and gown. Plus, you’re there to support someone on one of the biggest days of their life, so it’s a good idea to dress the part.
Like our recommendation for attendees, you should dress in something formal or semi-formal; ditch the jeans, sneakers, and t-shirts, and go with a dress, heels, or flats. At the end of the day, you want to dress nice enough to look great in any pictures you take with the person who graduated.
Dress for Success at Your College Graduation
College graduation is a big day and you have to dress the part. While you don’t have to dress like you’re going to a black tie formal, you should dress for success and wear something you’re comfortable taking pictures in.
That said, at the end of the day make sure you wear something that makes you happy. Remember, it’s your day, so be proud of your achievements and try not to get too caught up on how you look. And for those of you attending someone else’s graduation, semi-formal is your best bet.
